PEN Architect is an independent architectural design studio founded in 2011 by Paul Erik Nelson, AIA. PEN specializes in custom commercial and residential projects. Professional services include project master planning and design for retail, office, tenant-finish, single-family residential, multi-family residential and interior design.
The firm employs a modern design approach balanced with opportunities to adaptively recycle, sustain and rehabilitate older structures that are meaningful to the built environment. Historic preservation projects account for approximately 15% of its work portfolio.
Nelson, a graduate of Iowa State University, is a true advocate for the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. His work blends historic preservation with an innovative, meaningful and sensible approach to adaptive reuse.
Nelson’s work on the Mastercraft Building was published in the New York Times. The Nebraska AIA has recognized his past work with design awards for the Joy Residence, Salhany Residence and the Whitcomb Conservatory in Crete, Neb.
